Stability of Standing Accretion Shocks, with an Eye toward Core Collapse Supernovae

چکیده

We examine the stability of standing, spherical accretion shocks. Accretion shocks arise in core collapse supernovae (the focus of this paper), star formation, and accreting white dwarfs and neutron stars. We present a simple analytic model and use timedependent hydrodynamics simulations to show that this solution is stable to radial perturbations. In two dimensions we show that small perturbations to a spherical shock front can lead to rapid growth of turbulence behind the shock, driven by the injection of vorticity from the now non-spherical shock. We discuss the ramifications this instability may have for the supernova mechanism. Subject headings: accretion—hydrodynamics—shock waves —supernovae:general—turbulence

Analytic Approach to the Stability of Standing Accretion Shocks: Application to Core-Collapse Supernovae

We explore an analytic model of the accretion shock in the post bounce phase of a core-collapse supernova explosion. We find growing oscillations of the shock in the l = 1 and l = 2 modes, in agreement with a variety of existing numerical simulations. For modest values of the ratio of the outer accretion shock to that of the inner boundary to the shocked flow, the instability appears to derive ...

The Spherical Accretion Shock Instability in the Linear Regime

We use time-dependent, axisymmetric, hydrodynamic simulations to study the linear stability of the stalled, spherical accretion shock that arises in the post-bounce phase of core-collapse supernovae. We show that this accretion shock is stable to radial modes, with decay rates and oscillation frequencies in close agreement with the linear stability analysis of Houck and Chevalier. For non-spher...

Stability of the Accretion Flows with Stalled Shocks in Core-Collapse Supernovae

Bearing in mind the application to the theory of core-collapse supernovae, we performed a global linear analysis on the stability of spherically symmetric accretion flows through a standing shock wave onto a proto neutron star. As unperturbed flows, we adopted the spherically symmetric steady solutions obtained with realistic equation of state and formulae for neutrino reaction rates taken into...

6 Neutrino - driven convection versus advection in core collapse supernovae

A toy model is analyzed in order to evaluate the linear stability of the gain region immediately behind a stalled accretion shock, after core bounce. This model demonstrates that a negative entropy gradient is not sufficient to warrant linear instability. The stability criterion is governed by the ratio χ of the ad-vection time through the gain region divided by the local timescale of buoyancy....

Global Nonradial Instabilities of Dynamically Collapsing Gas Spheres

Self-similar solutions provide good descriptions for the gravitational collapse of spherical clouds or stars when the gas obeys a polytropic equation of state, p = Kργ (with γ ≤ 4/3, and γ = 1 corresponds to isothermal gas). We study the behaviors of nonradial (nonspherical) perturbations in the similarity solutions of Larson, Penston and Yahil, which describe the evolution of the collapsing cl...
